The Week Ahead: 2 March 2009

Geylang United are away to Sengkang Punggol at Hougang Stadium on Thursday, 3 March 2009.
When Brunei’s DPMM host the Korean Super Reds on Wednesday, 4 March 2009, it will be the first ever S. League match to take place outside of Singapore. Darwin Cubs had previously competed in the FAS Premier League in 1995. The previous year, another Australian club, Perth Kangaroos, had won the Premier League. Both clubs played their home games in Australia. The S. League replaced the Premier League in 1996. All the other foreign clubs that have played in the S. League have been based in Singapore.
There is a full programme of league matches in England on Tuesday and Wednesday, including the following in the Premier League:
- Tuesday, 3 March 2009
- Liverpool v Sunderland
- Portsmouth v Chelsea
- West Brom v Arsenal
- Wednesday, 4 March 2009
- Blackburn v Everton
- Fulham v Hull
- Man City v Aston Villa
- Newcastle v Man Utd
- Stoke v Bolton
- Tottenham v Middlesbrough
- Wigan v West Ham
The delayed 5th round tie between Arsenal and Burnley and the rest of the 6th round ties in the FA Cup will be played next weekend. Earlier this season, Burnley knocked Arsenal out of the League Cup.
Feel free to discuss any of the week’s football, sports or other events below.

Wade can’t play on Wednesday because, as per his SMS to me:
Before anyone goes to watch, there are still two places to fill for Wednesday.
And Wade, do tell us more about the match when you find the time. In any event, you do need to use the blog more. 🙂

Playing in pink – Oldham Athletic wore a special pink strip in their 1-1 draw last night at home to Leeds United in League One to raise awareness for the Victoria Breast Unit at Royal Oldham Hospital.

Hi guys
I run a team in the Midweek ESPZen amateur league and this Wednesday we will be playing one of our league fixtures on the floating platform – where the National Day Celebrations are held. The platform now has a football pitch on it and this will be the first ever match on a floating platform in the world – at night. Spectators are more than welcome and there is no admission fee.
Kick off is at 7.20 pm. Hope to see some of you there – so you can have a good laugh at us – oh yeah we are called Agave Allstars (pronounced Agarvay) – after the plant used to make tequila!

There’s a picture of Agave Allstars here.
Three wins and two losses so far this campaign, and lying second in the ESPZen Midweek League (Season 8), good stuff.
I see Wednesday’s game is against second-from-bottom 1 Tanah Merah Football Club. Comfortable win for Agave Allstars?
I’m not sure how many are free to watch you on Wednesday, especially as we have two sessions that night ourselves, but do keep us updated on how you do on Wednesday, and the rest of the season.
If you like, and especially if you win on Wednesday, I’ll do a post on Agave Allstars on Thursday. Give me some information not already available on the ESPZen site. 🙂

Apart from the draw, Wade hasn’t provide me with any further information for a post on Agave Allstars. 🙂

For the first time this season, the bottom two in League Two do not comprise entirely of the clubs that started the season with massive points deductions – Luton Town (deducted 30 points in total), Bournemouth (deducted 17 points in total), and Rotherham United (deducted 17 points).
With Bournemouth winning yesterday and Grimsby Town losing, Grimsby now lie second from bottom on 23 points, a point behind Bournemouth. Luton Town remain bottom on 10 points.
It would be ironic if Grimsby were relegated to the Conference in the season that Hull City played in the top flight for the first time. As pointed out on Wikipedia

Apart from Super Reds playing the first ever S. League game outside Singapore (against DPMM in Brunei), the first ever night match on a floating platform (involving Wades’ Agave Allstars), and FIOFAFI’s first ever split bill, tonight sees S. League favourites SAFFC at home at Choa Chu Kang Stadium to one of their biggest challengers, Home United.
SAFFC have won the S. League title 3 years in a row. Last season, Super Reds were runners up and Home United third.

SAFFC won 3-1 with two second half goals after being level 1-1 with Home United at half time, despite having “bad boy” Ahmad Latiff sent off with the score at 2-1. Ahmad Latiff had opened the scoring in the first half.
DPMM beat Super Reds 2-1, also with two second half goals, after going 0-1 down in the first half.

Sengkang Punggol have finished in the bottom two in each of the last three seasons, but have gotten off to a decent start to the new season under new coach, Jorg Steinebrunner, formerly coach at Woodlands Wellington.
They’re at home to Geylang United tonight at Hougang Stadium.
Sengkang Punggol fans have their own blog. You can find a preview of tonight’s game there.
Now I’ll have to find out if Geylang United fans have their own blog.

Last night’s televised match finished Gombak United 3 Albirex Niigata 0. Three games into the season, only Gombak United and SAFFC have a 100% record.
