GIFFA System: 13 January 2010

Posted by rajiv on 13 January 2010

There have been a lot of changes since the FIOFAFI system was last summarised on 23 May 2009, including the move to the GIFFA Message Board.

I have summarised the system on a separate page, comprising of the following sections:

  • Scheduling
  • Players
  • Line Ups
  • Payment
  • Reports

I’ll add a section on the rules we play to later.

The links to “Routine Session System” and “Rules & Principles” in the right-hand column have been replaced with a link to the “GIFFA System” page.

    The page currently reads:

    Scheduling
Each game is put up on the Schedule Board on the GIFFA Message Board about 6 days beforehand under a separate thread.

Currently, the regular games are as follows:

    * Tuesdays, 9 to 10 pm, The Cage
    * Thursdays, 9 to 10 pm, The Cage
    * Saturdays, 5 to 6 pm, Sports Planet
    * Sundays, 5 to 6 pm, Turf City

If the game on a particular day of the week doesn’t fill up easily over two or more weeks, it may be scheduled fortnightly, or may be given a few weeks break.

    Players
If you wish to play in a particular game, add your name to the thread for that game. You can post either as a registered member of the Message Board or as a guest. If you are new, either register as a member or add a comment on the FIOFAFI blog.

You can add names for others as well. However, if you add names for others, it is your responsibility to ensure they turn up and on time. A place is not considered as taken until it is filled without qualification by a named player.

The number of players for a game depends on the venue:

    * 10 for a game at The Cage (5-a-side). However, we will go ahead even with 8 (4-a-side).
    * 10 for a game at Sports Planet (5-a-side). However, we can go up to 12 (6-a-side) from time to time if more want to play.
    * 14 to 16 for a game on the big pitch at Turf City (7 or 8-a-side). If we get 20 to 24, we can have a 4-team mini-tournament (with the big pitch divided into 2 small pitches). If we only have 10 to 12, we will go ahead with a game on a small pitch (5 or 6-a-side).

Once the places are filled, anyone else can only be in reserve. Reserves often get to play due to withdrawals. Anyone who frequently withdraws at a late stage or fails to turn up without good reason may only be allowed to put their names down in reserve for a period of time.

If places for a game are very slow to fill up, I may SMS those who haven’t played for a while or those who often play on that day but haven’t put their names down for any games that week. If places are still slow to fill up, the game may be cancelled.

    Line ups

For each game, any regular can volunteer to divide the players into two teams. If no one else does so, I will do so. The line ups will be added to the thread for that game.

We can stick to black and white as the two colours from now on. However, as those who play on Sunday prefer red, the colours can be red and white.

    Payment

The cost of the pitch is divided by the number of players:

    * $80 at the Cage divided by 8 or 10.
    * $85 at Sports Planet divided by 10 to 12.
    * $160 for a big pitch at Turf City divided by 14 to 24.
    * $80 for a small pitch at Turf City divided by 10 to 12.

    Reports

A report will be put up on the Reports Board of the GIFFA Message Board the day after the game. Any registered member can put up the report. The report comprises a poll for the player of the game. You have to be a registered member to vote in the poll. The poll is locked after 7 days.

Anyone who played can add the result and any other comments about the game.

Monday nights at Turf City are no longer covered, as according to Tom:

I think this message board sucks, so future Monday games will be arranged by sms/text only

Wednesdays, 9 to 10 pm, at Sports Planet are under review.

Regular Wednesday night sessions will resume when we are able to get 10 players on a more regular basis.

      • rajiv said

In reply to the following from Neil M:

I would like to continue the Wednesday sessions if we can drum up the usual regulars who used to play last year. We never had problems getting 10 then so hopefully, once people get to grips with the new website, this can remain as a regular fixture.

I don’t think it is so much the new website Neil. Numbers for Wednesday nights have been volatile since I switched it to Sports Planet in May 2009 due to availability, requiring a lot of SMSing to fill up places since then.

Of those on the Participant List, the following have played on Wednesday nights at Sports Planet at various times – Adam C, AJ, Alan, Alex F, Amrish, Andre, Andrew T, Andy M, Azmi, Benjamin, Bernard, Bobby, Boon Yick, Damian Y, David G, Desmond T, Duncan, Eam, Gilbert L, Imran, Joel, John J, John S, Kannan, Kelvin D, Kenneth C, Kenny, Kevin A, Liam , Melvin L, Murali, Murray, Nick C, Reza, Ron, Sivaraj, Steve F, Sushil, Sze Kuan, Tim C, Uday, Wade, Weeliam, yourself and myself.

For one reason or another, many of the abovenamed haven’t played for a while, or played regularly, while others are now playing on other days of the week.

Also, I haven’t been SMSing as much.

The numbers for Wednesday night were more stable when it was at The Cage (up to May 2009). While there are a couple of the abovenamed who will not play at The Cage (finding the pitches too small and stuffy), there is a bigger pool of potential players for Wednesday night at The Cage as quite a few can make it there after work even if they live elsewhere. Sports Planet on a workday night is only attractive to those who live in the east.

My other concern is not to spread ourselves too thin – I’d rather have 10 for one session than 6 for each of two sessions.

You could try SMSing any of the abovenamed to see if they will play on Wednesday nights at either Sports Planet or The Cage. In any event, let me know if you prefer Sports Planet or The Cage for Wednesday nights from March 2010 onwards.

      • rajiv said

I’ll switch the Wednesday night game to The Cage to see if it works better.

        The advantages are:

        • There is the consistency of having all the mid-week games (Tuesday to Thursday) at the same venue (The Cage).
        • The pool of available players is bigger, and not so skewed towards those living in the east.
        • We can proceed with the game even if we only have 8 players.
        • It is slightly cheaper at The Cage.

        I’ll start from Wednesday, 10 February 2010.

      • rajiv said

We managed a representative game last night.

Mark T, instead of reserving 5 places, just put the names of your players down as they confirm, and later discuss with the other players whether all your 5 players should be on the same team. I’m sorry, but reserving places for unnamed players creates difficulties. Apart from those listed here, sometimes, we don’t know until a very late stage whether there is any chance of the game going on (as was the case yesterday).

Even if you have more than or less than 5, if we get to 10 in total, we can adapt the line ups.

More importantly, we are more likely to have a game, so that everyone who wants to play on a Wednesday night gets to play (if they put their names down early enough).

    • rajiv said

The line ups will be put up by the day of the game. The colours are black and white (except for Sunday, which is red and white). Bring both colours if you can. At least bring the colour assigned to you.

As we haven’t been able to get 10 players for a couple of weeks now, I’ll give the Saturday evening game a break until numbers pick up.

The introduction for each game now contains the following:

Add your name below if you want to and are able to play.

When there are [maximum number] players, anyone else can only be in reserve …. The game will go ahead if there are [minimum number] confirmed.

Line ups will be put up by the day of the game. Bring both a [black/red] top and a white top to the game.

If having put your name down, you subsequently cannot make it, please withdraw your name below. If you do not have access to the message board, or you have to withdraw after the line ups have been put up, SMS me or the person doing the line ups.

If you played last night, don’t forget to vote for your player of the game.

After last night’s game, when there are late changes in personnel, or the game is reduced to a 4-a-side, please feel free to ignore my suggested line ups, as it hard to give thought to the evenness of sides on top of finding replacements.

In fact, when it’s 4-a-side, just re-do the line ups at the venue itself.

An important purpose of suggesting line ups beforehand is to save time, especially for the night games. However, if there are only 8 players, it can’t be that difficult to do new line ups, can it?

I’ve added the following to the description of the Schedule Board:

Our games are currently played at either The Cage (Kallang) or The Premier Pitch at Turf City (Bukit Timah). Click on the links for location maps.

If you play don’t forget to pay your share before you leave. It’s rare that anyone forgets to pay, but it does happen on the odd occasion. If you don’t pay, we’ll hunt you down …. 🙂

For last Sunday’s game at Turf City, we were one short under the schedule post, but two players turned up unannounced, so it was 9 v 8, and a bit crowded.

The upper limit for playing on the big pitch is 16. If additional players turn up, they risk not playing or being limited to substitutes.

As there were 2 additional players for 1 available spot, they could have taken turns to fill that spot.

Some issues arising from last night’s game:

    1. If you put another player’s name down for him, please confirm it with him by SMS or e-mail. I find the thing about verbal confirmations is that a player may say “yes” without checking his schedule. If it’s by SMS or e-mail, the player will usually check his schedule first before confirming.

    2. If you are hoping to be recovered from an injury in time to play, but you wish to put your name down first, put it as contingent. Putting your name down as confirmed and subsequently withdrawing because you haven’t fully recovered is not helpful – it takes up a place that someone else might like to have, and if the withdrawal is at a late stage, it gives me more work (unless you are able to find your own replacement).

    3. Make up your mind. Changing your mind more than once whether to play in a particular game gives me more work, especially when it is on the day of the game itself, and by way of SMSes to me (rather than posting on the message board).

    4. The scheduling post for weeknight games at The Cage clearly states “The game will go ahead if there are at least 8 confirmed.” With suitable modification to the rules, 4-a-side at The Cage can in fact be better than 5-a-side. If you do not wish to play 4-a-side, make it clear when you confirm, in which case, you can only be in reserve until the day of the game itself. (The same applies to anyone who only wants to play on the big pitch at Turf City on Sunday evenings. As stated in each schedule thread, if there are only 10 to 12 confirmed, the game will go ahead on the small pitch.)

    5. If you are unwell on the day of the game, I would hope that you withdraw by early afternoon at the latest.

We are all adults here, and I hope everyone can continue to participate in the right spirit.

As there are additional considerations raised in the comments to this post, references to the GIFFA System will now be linked to Comment 1 above, instead of the the separate page created for that purpose.

The Message Board currently has two categories – Games, and General.

The Games category has two boards – Schedule and Reports. The General category also has two boards – Suggestions and Chat.

The description of the Schedule Board is currently as follows:

GIFFA is open to everyone who wants to and is able to play in the right spirit.

Forthcoming games are listed on this Board.

Please read the GIFFA System page.

Our games are currently played at either The Cage (Kallang) or The Premier Pitch at Turf City (Bukit Timah). Click on the links for location maps.

New players, please either register or add a comment on the FIOFAFI blog.

The introduction for each scheduling thread will now read:

Add your name below if you want to and are able to play.

When there are [maximum number] players, anyone else can only be in reserve …. The game will go ahead if there are [minimum number] confirmed.

If you are keen to play, but take up is slow and there is a risk that the game may be cancelled, feel free to invite friends and acquaintances, or to SMS other players on the participant list who have previously played at The Cage on [particular day/time].

If you put down the name for another, please ensure the player has confirmed to you that he is able to play.

Line ups will usually be put up by the day of the game. Any regular can suggest the line ups.

Bring both a [black/red] top and a white top to the game to allow for changes to be made to the line ups at the game itself.

If having put your name down, you subsequently cannot make it, please withdraw your name below. If you do not have access to the message board, or you have to withdraw after the line ups have been put up, SMS the coordinator or the person doing the line ups.

If you withdraw on the day of the game itself, fail to turn up and play the full game, or are very late for the game, please provide a good reason.

Please also read the GIFFA System.

If you played last night, don’t forget to vote for your player of the game.

If I’m playing, I’ll be the coordinator. If anyone else is deemed to be coordinator, please SMS him about late withdrawals or being late.

On top of everything else I am doing, I have returned to practice on a part-time basis, so I don’t have the time to coordinate games in which I am not playing.

The GIFFA System is summarised again below:

Each game is put up on the Schedule Board on the GIFFA Message Board about 6 days beforehand under a separate thread.

If the game on a particular day of the week and/or time of day doesn’t fill up easily over two or more weeks, it may be scheduled fortnightly, may be given a few weeks break, or terminated.

    Players
If you wish to play in a particular game, add your name to the thread for that game. You can post either as a registered member of the Message Board or as a guest. If you are new, either register as a member or add a comment on the FIOFAFI blog to introduce yourself.

Anyone who on several occasions and without good reason withdraws at a late stage, fails to turn up and play the full game, or is very late, may only be allowed to put their names down in reserve for a period of time.

The line ups should be added to the thread for that game.

Any regular who is playing and puts names down for others will be deemed to be the coordinator for the game unless he expressly declines, or another regular volunteers to be coordinator. If more than one regular puts names down for others, the one who has put down more or the most names will be the deemed coordinator. As coordinator, all you have to do is keep tabs of any withdrawals on the day of the game itself, and suggest line ups if no one else does.

The colours for weeknight games is black and white. The colours for Sunday are red and white. All players are requested to bring both colours so that changes can be made to the line ups at the game itself.

    Payment

The cost of the pitch is divided by the number of players:

    * $80 at the Cage divided by 8 or 10.

    Points table

I maintain a points table. Points are awarded for votes in the player poll, adding comments about a game, and playing in the right spirit. The table is updated once a month. Details can be found on the “Fun” page.

The link in the right-hand column now brings you here. The latest discussion on the points table is here.
