Tuesday Night At The Cage: 17 February 2009

Posted by rajiv on 18 February 2009

The teams lined up as follows last night:

  • Reds:  Murray, Rajiv, Yuchi, Boon Yick, Melvin
  • Whites:  Adam, Gilbert, Edardy, Alan, Chris

Whites looked stronger on paper, but it was a close opening.  It took a while for the scoring to get started but two long-range efforts in fairly quick succession from Alan put Whites 2-0 after about 20 minutes.  Reds pulled one back, but an own goal put Whites 3-1 up within a short while.

Whites pulled ahead 5-1 but Reds were still in it at 5-3.  Reds were creating at least as many chances as Whites but Reds couldn’t finish theirs, while Whites did, to pull ahead 8-3.  With about 10 minutes to go, Edardy started several jinking runs, several of which ended in goals, as Whites ran out 13-3 winners.

Shhhh, the post on the jersey will be up later. Gilbert was just “modelling” a sample last night.

Wah… Got sneak preview.. Guess with 1 raving review, it must be a HIT then! i want also! 😛

Wait, this is known as a “Soft Launch” is it not.

We have gone upscale. Maybe we can franchise a label out of this and start a fashion empire to supplement our games. Imagine, no need to play for the games every week.

Either this or we sell the plot to Media Corp for their next serial.

I was hoping to get one before I left..

Gilbert was a little over protective about his precious shirt – i had a friendly shirt tug and ran off thinking i was trying to rob it off him haha.

Was a good game last night, but i guess it showed the inadequacies of picking teams based on stats. Whites were commanding all the way through the game with nice touches and movement – reds had a lot of chances but these were usually long range efforts as we couldnt break down the whites defence.

I blame the new bouncy ball tho as a few players struggled to get used to it and control it with their first touch… now what do they say about bad workmen

There is where problem lies Murray.. it is a fair way of selecting players but not neccessarily balanced.. Actually i enjoyed playing FIOFAFI the most when i first joined and was ranked lowly. Got to enjoy lots back then. Now is like a question mark thing. Like Singapore’s government. U will never know whats gonna happen till the day itself comes 🙂

I think that makes it more fun. I’ve been on the unbalanced side quite a few times and that’s like extra motivation to try and win the game.

Murray, I think we got in front of Whites’ goal several times – those were the chances we kept missing!

The game was quite balanced until the last 10 minutes, even though I was holding back throughout so as not to cause a recurrence of the groin strain. Boon Yick hadn’t played for a while, and he went flat in those last 10 minutes, which basically left us with 5 against 3.

We’ve had two games with 10-goal winning margin as recently as two weeks ago, with very even sides. You were on the winning side on one of those occasion. 🙂

We even had a 14-goal winning margin that week in what was described as an even game.

It’s easy to forget that we had many one-sided games last year. As recently as 2 September 2008, before I started using the ranking method to determine line ups, we had a 17-goal winning margin.

Yaseen, when you say “Actually i enjoyed playing FIOFAFI the most when i first joined and was ranked lowly”, maybe that’s because you take the rankings too seriously. 🙂

    Just don’t think about it.

The ranking method of determining line ups is the best method we’ve had so far, and it’s the most objective.

Hi Rajiv, when i first started, even though there were losses for me, it was fun and all and honestly, the rankings dont mean anything to me!! Like you say its just a way to determine line ups. If i would have taken the rankings seriously, then i would have said its unfair to determined a line up based on it. I mentioned it was fair and its just coincidental that when i was playing with higher ranked guys(when i was a newbee) it was somehow enjoyable then serious. Maybe its the Bukit Timah kakis.. Its not that i take the rankings seriously like you mentioned cause at the end of the day, this is social football where we come and enjoy, not a competitive league or something 😉

  12. yaseen said

Ya Rajiv, look after your groin.. Maybe its not football related injury…. 🙂

    @ Yassen

Reference Bukit Timah guys.. Yup, generally they are more skilled team players. You can check with Tom to confirm that.. KEKEKEKEKEKE.

Yaseen, I may lay off for another 2 to 3 weeks to fully recover. If I have no choice but to play to make up numbers, I’ll limit myself to 1 a week for a few weeks.

  15. yaseen said

Yup u better rest Jiv.. once you are older it takes time to recuperate.. these month seems to have lesser players then usual… every1 busy???

  16. rajiv said

Actually Yaseen, the total number of players is up. A few injuries, a few playing once a week rather than twice, a few with other work, family or social commitments. It means about about 10 fewer players this week alone – enough for an additional session!

Despite that, we’ll still manage 4 sessions this week. Don’t forget that 4 sessions a week only became a regular thing in November 2008, and even then, with a couple of weeks with only 3 sessions in November/December 2008.

I’m hoping we can manage 4 sessions next week even without Boris!

Ha Ha.. Gonna miss Boris aka SMALL FRY… BON VOYAGE

Ouch. Don’t make me feel worse about my departure. Oh by the way, my manager actually said I might come back to Singapore after a month in Jordan to allow me to see my family before going off to Dubai. Nice guy..

  19. rajiv said

Nothing to stop you commenting on the blog Boris, even from Jordan. 🙂

  20. Boris said

True. But then the soccer withdrawal will hit.. 😀

I agree with Murray. It was one-sided….. but it wasn’t our fault.

The ball was bouncy, the pitch was flaky, the music was loud and the shrimp sandwiches were stale….

… plus Gilbert kept distracting us with his sexy shirt.

  22. rajiv said

Shankar, it’s a numbers game. Even with about 12,000 page views a month, the entire blog is only worth about S$1,693.62.

We’re not going to make any money from a label, not anytime in the foreseeable future anyway.

In any event, everything is provided to you at cost – the cost of the pitches (paid to The Cage, Sports Planet, Turf City, FICO) and the cost of the jerseys.

The work done in organising the sessions, designing the logo and supplying the jerseys has been provided for free, so everyone has been getting a lot for free as it is!
