Regular indoor football, sport and other activity for working adults in Singapore

Schedule: 7 February 2010

Posted by rajiv on 7 February 2010

Currently, the two most popular sessions are:

  • Sundays, 5 to 6 pm, at Turf City (14 to 20 players).
  • Tuesdays, 9 to 10 pm, at The Cage (8 to 10 players).

Thursdays, 9 to 10 pm, at The Cage (8 to 10 players) has also been largely sustainable.

I’m trying to re-start the session on Wednesdays, 9 to 10 pm.  For the reasons set out here, I’m trying it at The Cage instead of Sports Planet.

The game on Saturdays, 5 to 6 pm at Sports Planet, has not been regular as numbers have been volatile. Even when we’ve had enough players, it has required a lot of SMSing.

I’m considering moving the Saturday game to Turf City after Chinese New Year to see if we can get a bigger pool of players.  It will be on the small pitch (10 to 12 players) to begin with.

Coincidentally, when I first tried starting a regular weekend game in March last year, it was on a Saturday evening at Turf City.  Since the Sunday evening game at Turf City started in May last year,  numbers have grown.  On the other hand, numbers for the Saturday evening game at Sports Planet have been volatile since I first started it in August last year.

To canvass views, please vote below:

We might end up without any regular game at Sports Planet.  Anyway, Sports Planet have put up their prices to $85 per hour from the start of the year.

The game scheduled for Wednesday, 10 February 2010, didn’t work out. I’ll try a Wednesday night game again sometime next month.

For the Saturday evening game, Turf City is leading over Sports Planet by 4 votes to 3. I will try having the Saturday evening game at Turf City next month.

    The voting remains open.

We barely managed a game last Wednesday, but no one for tomorrow night’s game, so it is cancelled. I may not try Wednesday night again until next month.

The poll is evenly poised at 4 votes each. Ace has informed me that he only wants to play at Sports Planet on Saturday evening, while Robbie prefers a venue in the east (either The Cage or Sports Planet).

One advantage to me of sticking to only The Cage and Turf City is that I only have to deal with two venues, instead of three. However, if Sports Planet is the preferred venue for Saturday evenings, I’ll re-introduce it there.

Having more players would help in re-starting the Wednesday night and Saturday evening games. Feel free to introduce friends and acquaintances. The Sunday evening game has really taken off because we have so many new players.

The Sunday evening game at Turf City has a large pool of players. In order to re-start the Saturday game, I’ll try to build upon that pool by having the Saturday game at Turf City as well.

I’ll make it slightly earlier, so that it is more convenient for those who either go into the office on a Saturday morning, or go out on a Saturday night. I tried to get 4 to 5 pm for next Saturday, but it is fully booked, so I have taken 3 to 4 pm.

Even though Sports Planet is much closer for me personally, overall, I think Turf City will work better in the longer term. To those who only want to play at Sports Planet or in the east, please consider Turf City. Getting to Turf City from the east on a Saturday afternoon is not too difficult. There are several players who regularly travel from the west to The Cage on weeknights.

      Ultimately:

      • Turf City has a better pitch and is cheaper.
      • Turf City is cooler and airier in the afternoon.

We’ve had a game on Wednesday but not today (Thursday) this week.

I think that has more to do with today being the eve of a public holiday.

Generally, Thursday nights have been more sustainable, and it has been difficult to have games on both Wednesday and Thursday nights, as we still don’t have enough players for 2 additional mid-week games (on top of Tuesday nights) especially with several injuries about.

I’ll schedule games on both Wednesday night and Thursday night next week, but I suspect only one will go on, the one with more players putting their names down on the message board.

What might happen in the longer run is that we’ll stick with Tuesday and Thursday nights, but once a month, we’ll have a game on Wednesday night instead of or in addition to Thursday night.
